About

Proximal Living is a specialist provider of residential children’s homes. We are responsive to neurodiversity and many of our children have Education Health Care Plans (EHCPs) or have been identified as potentially benefiting from one. We have a special interest in working with children with educational, social and emotional needs. We believe that our passion and enthusiasm complement our research and evidence informed approach to providing child centred environments.

It is really important to us to provide a culturally competent system of care by promoting the importance of culture throughout our organisation. Understanding cultural differences in response to trauma, views on neurodiversity, by children, parents/carers will be reliant on getting thorough background information and building trusting relationships with children and the adults who know them best.

About Us

The story so far…

Why does anyone try to open a specialist children’s home?

In my case, I wanted to make a difference. As an Educational Psychologist, I work with children and young people from 0 to 25 years old from different backgrounds and with diverse strengths and needs. However, my first professional introduction to working with children with care experience was as a seconded Probation Officer in a Youth Justice Service in London. On my first observation of a colleague, we went to
visit a young person who had recently been accommodated by their Local Authority. To say, that I was disturbed by the living conditions of this young person would be an understatement. At the time of our visit, the property was sub-standard and the care and attention the young person was receiving by professionals was inadequate.

Prior to this experience, my childhood friend had taken me to his semi-independent home following the breakdown in his stay at his foster parents’ home. In those days, I was naïve to the arrangements made for children in Local Authority care. As a child, I was less aware of the challenges that came alongside having care experience. But the effects of trauma and loss that preceded my friend’s entry into the care system were clear to see in his behaviours at school and in the community. It was through these types of experiences that I started to understand that children can communicate in a variety of ways to express their distress.

The name “proximal” was inspired by different psychological approaches but ultimately it was its meaning that influenced our decision to use it. By proximal, we mean “situated near the centre” or “close”, and that is exactly where we place the children, young people and families we work so hard to support.

The proximal processes that we focus on developing are the everyday close interactions between a child and their environment (e.g., playing with toys, group or solitary play, reading, learning new skills and knowledge, sports, caring for others…). Through increasingly complex interaction with parents and carers, children and young people begin to take control of their own development. This is why proximal processes have been described as the “primary engines” of human development.

Promoting healthy development by using strategies that identify and meet the needs of the children in our care…

Theory, Research and Practice

Evidence-based practice is a term that originated in the field of health and has grown with a focus on accountability within a range of professions and public services. At the outset, its aim was to generate reliable insights regarding what interventions (e.g. medication or psychological therapies) are likely to work best for which groups and why. The approach draws on research that investigates cause and effect in relation to interventions.

Below are examples of theories and research that have influenced the care and services we provide:
